Interesting bit of history Zachary about the early bus routes and later subway lines between Beijing and Tongzhou.

Transport buffs might also be interested to know that the first mechanized transport link between these two districts was a branch railway line from Dongbianmen constructed by a British military railway engineering unit, opening in March 1902. This happened in the aftermath of the eight-nations foreign invasion and military occupation of Beijing 1900-1902 to suppress the "Boxer" uprising (aka "Righteous Fists of Harmony" Movement).

After peace had been restored, during the gradual withdrawal of foreign forces, the military railway unit, known as the BRA (British Railway Administration) in a spirit of co-operation with the post-Boxer Imperial Chinese Government and at the latter's request,  also built a small branch line and sidings to serve the Imperial Granary (皇家粮仓  located near Dongsishitiao. This railway line was then used for bringing rice tributes to the Emperor into the centre of the city, replacing many of the slow moving junks using the Grand Canal and its tributary rivers. As a result of this, thousands of "junkmen" progressively lost their employment as the railway stole trade from the canal boats.
